Fortune Duck Restaurant Gouger Street Adelaide

Address
65 Gouger St
Adelaide
SA, 5000
Australia

This is not a review of the food offered at Fortune Duck, rather its simply a post about our experience of dining there this week. There's a couple of reasons why this is not a review, firstly, we are not food critics. Secondly, we never actually got to taste the food we ordered, but read more to find out about that bit..

This place opened recently in Adelaide and we had noticed it being renovated a couple of weeks ago. In the front window you will notice Roast Ducks hanging up, rather fitting as its called Fortune Duck (the ducks hanging there are more like unfortunate ducks though)

The service was OK, but we did notice a few tables did not get menus when they were seated and they had to ask for them. Now to why we didn't get our food. We ordered a few dishes, stuffed tofu hotpot, salt and pepper squid and half a roast duck. We received the duck quite quickly on its own. However after that, things didn't go too well. To sum it up, the food never showed.. 15 minute wait became 30, 30 minutes became 45, still with no sign of the food.

After the 45 minute wait without the food (it was more like an hour), we decided that was enough and left to pay for what we had already had eaten. So there goes, a rather unfortunate meal at Fortune Duck and of what we had eaten, the duck wasn't that good and other dishes didn't look that enticing either. We think it was quite unfortunate we had this experience, being a new restaurant and all, we can only wonder what the future of this place will be. The fact that there are other really great Chinese places in this area does not help them either.

Fortune Duck really is living the ethos of "SLOW FOOD" but for all the wrong reasons...

Yeah you've been keeping a low profile... Til now!!

So you traveled to copenhagen recently? Cool place isn't it?

Haha, by the way, the 'slow food' comment is hilarious. Guess they kinda misinterpreted the concept!

Yes, I was fortunate to spend some time in Copenhagen. I loved it and will look forward to returning some day! As you might see, I was delighted with the amount of interesting bikes there too!

i went to fortune duck today, half a year later and i have to say, it was really good! it exceeded my expectations. the staff there were really nice and attentive. they greeted my friend and i as soon as we stepped into the room and told informed us of places where we could sit, allowing us to choose. the staff were efficient and quick to respond to customer needs. the interior of the restaurant was really nice! it'd been renovated recently, so that was good. the food was excellent as well, and not at all pricey!

overall, i was very, very pleased. only disappointment was the tea that was ordered - it wasn't very strong, and in my personal taste: it just tasted weak, and quite a bit like hot water. that is the only disadvantage, otherwise. marvelous experience! i'll be back for more :-)

We went to this restaurant when it first opened and were very unimpressed. HOWEVER, since then we have quite a few people have told us how good the food was. Not wanting to be too uptight about things decided to give them another chance. I am the first to admit this since going back FD has become one of our favourite grazing spot on Gouger (ST). This is quite an accolade for any body who knows this vibrant lively eating strip across from the Adelaide central markets. Thoroughly recommended!! We eat there at the time.

We live around the corner and eat there all the time. It's great - in fact, it's our choice among all the cheap cafes on Gouger St! I think the problems you had were teething problems - I'd recommend you give them another chance! Mike

I have to say, that your review paints a very different picture to what i have personally experienced on many different occasions at Fortune Duck.

I found that the service there was impeccable, the staff were very friendly, and more so, with the 6 month gap that I had taken from dining there previously, the waiter that served us remembered me from those 6 months ago, what we ordered, and even where we sat in the restaurant!!

The food is also very nicely plated, it was served very quickly and tasted nothing other than heaven. Their three course Peking Duck is my absolute favourite and no matter the day or time, I would eat there as much as possible if i had the opportunity.
